As a college student, you may face the challenge of making your bedroom look beautiful and comforting when all you’ve been given is a boring, rectangular dorm room. Transforming any bedroom can be frustrating, but is especially annoying in a college bedroom when you aren’t usually allowed to paint or hang things on the wall. Fear not! Despite your limitations, there are still many things you can do to transform your space without breaking the bank—or the walls.

1. Go green

Perhaps the easiest way to take a space from cell block to zen-ed out is to add some plants. Small, easy to maintain plants are available to buy in many places like grocery stores, garden centers, and even lifestyle shops. If you’re going for a small plant, which usually suits a small space, they won’t often break the bank either.

Desert-based plants like cacti and succulents are notoriously easy to keep alive, so you won’t have to worry about upkeep. If you’re still worried that your green thumb isn’t so green, you can always try some fake plants which will be impossible to kill. Though they won’t give you the benefits of cleaner air, they will bring a fresh look to your space.

2. Try some wall accents

Because you probably won’t be allowed to paint your walls or hang large paintings, you may be wondering what to do with all the blank wall space. Luckily, many interior design companies have found a solution. Removable wall decals are a quick, efficient, and temporary design element that won’t make you lose your renter’s deposit.

Depending on your personal style, you can find wall decals that range from floral patterns to geometric designs to the Eiffel Tower!

3. Add a rug

Because bedrooms are often carpeted, many people forget about rugs as bedroom décor. On the contrary, rugs are a wonderful, non-permanent way to bring color and pattern into a room that may otherwise be a sea of beige. A great rug can really take your space from boring to inviting in one easy step.

Some things to be conscious of when purchasing a rug: size, color, and cost.

You’ll want to make sure that your rug is going to suit the size of your room. A too big rug in a small room can make things look out of proportion. When in doubt, go smaller.

You should also be conscious of the rug’s color and pattern. Rugs are a great way to add a pop of color to a dull room, but before you choose something too crazy, you should make sure that it fits in with your already established color palette, otherwise, you could end up throwing the balance off completely.

Unfortunately, rugs can be a bit pricey if you aren’t careful. If you’re looking to buy a new rug, try some secondhand shops, outlet stores, or ask your family members if they have any they don’t use.

4. Liven up your linen

One of the simplest ways to transform a bedroom is to swap out your duvet for something new. However, on a college budget, you may not be able to afford a down payment on a new bedspread.

Luckily, another way to add spice to your bed is by layering different textiles on it. You can try adding a soft, fuzzy blanket at the foot of your bed to make it seem cozier. You could add a patterned quilt to bring some intrigue to a neutral bedroom.

Another easy way to take your bedroom to the next level is by adding some decorative pillows. Ideally, you should stick to 3 or less decorative pillows, otherwise, it will start to feel crowded. Try and find some pillows that complement what you already have, but that may bring in a new texture or color. Your decorative pillows don’t have to match perfectly, but should coordinate.

5. Lighten up

Does your bedroom feel dull and dark even when the sun is shining? Not all of us are blessed with large windows that offer wonderful, natural light. If the only lighting in your bedroom is coming from a harsh, overhead fluorescent light, this may be what is throwing off the feeling of the space.

Bedrooms should be able to have low, dim lights for reading and chilling out. A great way to change the vibe of your room is to add side table lamps with low, warm bulbs. You can also add string lights to give your room a whimsical feel.

Overall, you want your bedroom to be a safe haven where you can go and relax. Your room should reflect your personality whether that be bright, zen, or minimalistic. Though you may have been given a room with little to brag about, with a few easy steps and solutions, you’ll be able to transform your bedroom into a perfect place for you.
